'Things are only going to get worse': More than 170K Ontario patients lost family doctors in first 6 months of pandemic, study finds

The study, led by Unity Health Toronto and non-profit research institute ICES, found the number of family physicians who stopped working doubled between March and September 2020 compared to the same time period the previous year.On average, between April and September from 2010 through to 2019, researchers say about 1.6 per cent of family physicians stopped work.

The study found that about 385 of 12,000 physicians stopped their practice, and that those who did were more likely to be aged 75 or older and care for under 500 patients. “More research is needed to understand the long-standing impact on primary care attachment and access to care and the broader impact on population health,” the study says.

AmitAryaMD This is kind of a big deal.

Seems like government is more interested in buying major votes through child benefits and support, and not want to invest in basic healthcare; extreme liberal mindset

I just hate Canadian doctors. These money mongers are good for nothing. I have been wrongly diagnosed multiple times. It is such a shame that you can't even trust your doctor in Canada.

And they would subject Internationally trained physicians to a rigorous process so they are discouraged to be practicing doctors in the country and rather settle for more accessible occupations such as driving uber and being security guards !

province posts surplus why is our healthcare and infrastructure struggling?

Serious question - do family doctors even do anything besides prescribe basic meds or refer you to specialists, both of which can be accessed by other means?

Who fired them? Say their names

My mom died, December 2020 from sepsis they misdiagnosed until it was too late. It was the hospital, her family doctor, the person covering him while he was on vacation - none of them wanted to see her - phone calls don’t work - when she did go to the hospital she was (1)

Doctors dying from the forced inoculations. CMA has stopped reporting them in Memoriam

And they'll be losing many more if trends continue.

I have been trying to get a family Dr for the last two years for my medication and still don't have one

Because people don’t trust in bent doctors anymore

Mine was always on vacation before he retired and now I’m stuck without one all together now

They probably moved out of the country

My husband's vascular surgeon sent us a letter saying he was no longer going to be is doctor (Dec. 2021) due to the government new restrictions. He wanted to issue a medical exemption, but we all know Why he couldn't. TrudeauMustGo TrudeauIsDestroyingCanada TrudeauResign

Even though i already had a family doctor, i didn't get help in time and now i have permanent damage. You get an appointment weeks later...

Lost how

That’s okay I google everything anyways… 👍🏼

Many doctors died mysteriously in the last six months.

I just lost mine on 9 September. No prospects in a new Family Doctor in Ottawa.

It’s called supply and demand. If you don’t train enough Doctors and fail to plan for those retiring this is what happens.

400,000 new immigrants a year (including elderly parents) will definitely not add to the burden.

Healthy young doctors are dying, some are retiring early rather than play politics against ethics, some refuse vaccines and aren't allowed to work. The decimation of our healthcare system has been deliberate.

But lock downs and mandates are going to save our healthcare system said experts, media and politicians

since I stayed home and did not go to a dr during this I am now punished... I lost my specialist as it was 2 years since I saw him... no logic even though I told them why, they do not care, it is written on paper and so be it for them

I wonder why?!?!?

Imagine that firing so many doctors means people lose them
