ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Robert Regular’s lawyers on Tuesday urged the court to acquit him of sexual assault, arguing the case against him is so weak, there’s no need for him to even raise any doubt.
Sullivan’s closing arguments focused on inconsistencies in the complainant’s statements to police and her testimony at trial, including her timeline of the events, her contact with Regular over the years, and people she had told about the alleged assaults, as well as other details she gave the court.
Other aspects of the woman’s evidence, Sullivan submitted, were implausible. For instance: that Regular would sexually assault her in a McDonald’s parking lot or busy law office in the middle of the day; that he would tell her not to worry about legal fees despite his office staff sending her invoices; that social workers would not document nor report a sexual assault she disclosed to them; and that he would have been physically capable of the described assaults, given his medical records.
“He was clear in his recollection on evidence that could exonerate him, but not on evidence that could implicate him,” Badcock said.
