It’s a bitter thing that we would lose our friend Christie Blatchford the very same week that an Ontario provincial government is, yet again, proving helpless in the face of a protest by Indigenous-Canadians.
These are all good signs. But it’s also had a much bigger impact than Caledonia ever did. As awful as the situation in that small town was, it was contained there. The province eventually made it go away by buying some land from a developer, thus defusing the situation. But it remained hyper-local. The Belleville blockade by a small group of protesters has shut down the backbone of passenger rail travel and transportation logistics in half of Canada.
There’s always room for optimism and negotiation. No one wants ugliness or a crisis. But Ontario Premier Doug Ford simply cannot allow the Belleville blockade to drag on the way Caledonia did. The stakes are simply much higher for more people, and will be felt much faster.
mattgurney You need a history lesson before you badmouth Doug Ford. Google the name Dudley George. Ford is hesitant to act because he is damed if he does and damed if he doesn't. The court injunction is in place, the cops have to do there jobs.
