The prime minister is fond of saying better is always possible. Unfortunately, so’s the opposite — worse is always possible, and we may well be heading in that direction.
The latter seem more aware of that danger, at this point. Indigenous leaders have thus far behaved responsibly. The number of actively engaged protesters is tiny, many of the band leaders are appealing for calm, and if anything, the situation seems far more tense in the East than the West. Indigenous leaders in the East are trying to prevent the situation from getting worse.
And that’s a problem. Canada has thus far mostly avoided the kind of surge in populist anger that has hit so many other of the advanced Western democracies. Maybe it’s just not in our character. But it’s just as likely — worse is always possible — that all we’ve lacked is the necessary alignment of circumstance.
If we’re at any impasse, then what? Sending in the police risks dramatic escalation and would be a major setback to reconciliation. Not sending in the police will hobble the economy, further alienate the West and leave a radical fringe in the driver’s seat of the reconciliation agenda, sidelining their own leadership. And the resulting public outrage will then be … wait for it … a major setback to reconciliation.
Why do I think Unifor is behind this?
A list of what our 'leader' understands: - - - - Oh...Canada!
The indigenous leaders probably understand, but they do not appear to have much influence over the behaviour of the people who elected them. Add to that the confusion added by the existence of 'hereditary' leaders and you have what we see - out of control anarchy.
Does Scheer understand the stupidity of inciting violence?
ginnyb3 We are on the brink of a radical redefinition of Canada’s relationship with “first nations”. It’s going in a direction that will tear this country apart. Badly. JustinTrudeau this is on YOU. cdnpoli
Nope ...this moment was brought to you by the Trudeau Foundation
acoyne Cpl. Marcel Lemay?
No intelligence whatsoever
acoyne Of course the PM is fully aware. Dumb insulting headline
Millions of Canadians are demanding it now. But it doesn't matter. In this country minority interests always come before majority interests. It's a uniquely Canadian thing.
Nope I dont think anyone benefits from this due to lack of leadership in trying to diffuse this quickly, this has only created greater division and anger, really sad whts happening to this country
Yes. But I don’t believe that Andrew Scheer does.
That would be a nope.
Does Trudeau understand anything?
Genocide is irreconcilable. The very fabric of society is built on the fact that genocide and theft is legal. Rather than giving up on genocide, Canada decided to continue these endeavors by other means.
Dead on.
Can someone drive to Orillia, search for the Commissioner of the OPP and tell him that there is a job to be done?
Trudeau certainly doesn’t understand hypocrisy, democracy or the law.
Not sure what jackass is leading these people down a path of self destruction when there is a path of prosperity and self reliance. It's a pity they way they prey on the weak mined and the lost. There must be 1 leader out there with some balls and look outside the box for help.
Yup, definitely moves back reconciliation. Are we always going to be at there sudden need for more blockades/attention? This could backfire for indigenous people, the rest of Canada will not forget. If they play along with us they have a lot to gain, get on the train with us!!!
FN’s need to get their ‘leadership’ sorted out. Elected chiefs should speak for their people (it’s 2020) not heriterary chiefs (with all due respect). It would be like the Queen of England overriding their Parliamnent. Just can’t have two leadership groups on opposite sides!
It don't matter
