Marni Soupcoff: Ontario finally gets it right and hires Jane Philpott soupcoff

The province has been doing so many things wrong in its management of the COVID-19 pandemic that it was beginning to look as though it would never get it together. There are the unfailingly hazy communications from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Williams — as indeterminate and lacking in solid metrics today as they were three months ago.

Ontario is a mess, and it has been lacking competent, inspired and decisive leadership to clean itself up. Now, by appointing former Liberal MP Jane Philpott as a special adviser on the Ontario Health Data platform, it will get that leadership at last. Announcing her new role, Philpott tweeted: “Access to timely, reliable, cohesive data is critical to stop the spread of COVID-19, and save lives.” She is right. Of course she is right. But a what relief to hear the words from someone with the integrity, smarts and grit to do something about it. What a relief to know that our painful days of bumbling around in the dark — not knowing where infections are concentrated or who is most at risk — are coming to an end.

Rather than standing idly by as her colleagues did, then federal health minister Philpott resigned from the federal Liberal cabinet during Justin Trudeau’s disgraceful handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair last year. She had too much integrity to look the other way when a friend and colleague was being bullied. She called the prime minister out for breaching his obligations.

Ontario mulls collection of race-based COVID-19 data; some argue it’s essentialThe province had granted some health units permission to begin collecting race-based data voluntarily and some have begun doing so, but critics argue it’s not enough What’s next, collection of race based data on the Thug Street Ganbangers who are slaughtering people on the streets of Toronto with their illegal guns? Don’t waste your money. We all know they are white kids. Justin says so. Hey ON want handouts from Trudeau to further his race baiting agenda you better get on board... How about race based data on daily gang violence in ON, when will that start? With race profiling with the virus can be good only for thing that it would shows what race of people are affected most other than that it should not be done EVER because the information could/would be used against that race there goes racism again THAT can't be ALLOWED

Ontario farms struggle to contain COVID-19 as migrant workers test positiveMore than 240 migrant workers across several operations have the coronavirus, raising concerns over living conditions and adequacy of testing Shut them down Windsor-Essex health unit had to be aware that migrant worker living and working conditions were a concern back in March. Stupid to bring in migrant workers during a pandemic. In most cases they can't social distance properly, it's not fair to put this burden on the Canadian Health care system and it's not fair to the migrant workers.
