The International Bridge spanning the St. Marys River is constructed differently than the one that fell after a collision with a container ship early Tuesday

A spokesperson for Michigan's Department of Transportation says it will keep a watchful eye on whatever findings come from the eventual investigation into today's tragic collision of a container ship into support columns on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"We we can't really speak to what happened there because it's still under investigation, it would not be appropriate for us to talk about what changes might be made to prevent something like that in the future when we don't really have any idea what happened there yet," said Weingarten. From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide due to ship or barge collision, according to the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure. Opened in 1977, the Francis Scott Key Bridge is named for the writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

With the ship barrelling toward the bridge at “a very, very rapid speed,” authorities had just enough time to stop cars from coming over the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.Rescuers pulled two people out of the water. One person who was treated at a hospital was discharged hours later.Six people who were working to fill potholes on the bridge at the time of the collision are still unaccounted for.
