'We need fighting. I know people don’t like it, some of you, but then you’re just going to have all those meatheads running around, little guys being rats out there, and that’s just the way it’s going to go.'

Credit: Fox Sports West. Kings defenceman Drew Doughty discusses how Kurtis MacDermid's fight with Nicolas Deslauriers helped motivate him and the team, and why fighting is still needed in the NHL.

Right. As long as refs and NHLPlayerSafety grow some balls and start calling the game properly. They’re headed in the right direction with concussion protocol and hits to the head. Fighting should be seen the same way. The price is too high and they know too much.

Sounds like an archaic bully statement. Name a “little guy being a rat running around”. Brad Marchand? One of the best players in the league and if the refs and the NHLPlayerSafety do their job properly he won’t be allowed to get away with being a rat.

No one touches Marchand, ever. I think you get pissed when they rip by you with speed, you give them the two hand to the knee area, “rat” whacks you back at whistle and the melee begins.

Probably the smartest thing to come out of this guys mouth. Completely agree.

Big agree

We need the type of players like Rouse, Gill, Gillies, Wendel, Chara... guys that can play, play hard and rectify situations quickly that are rat like... you know like Goudas, or Eller or Wilson... the “excuse me sort of not meant to hurt you” guys.

Is it just me or was he talking directly to Brad Marchand?

Case in point, half of the Bruins line up!

Fights still happen but I think he wants goons fighting so he doesn’t have to. He wants protection basically

I have no problem with 2 hockey players dropping the gloves. I just don’t want to see two designated fighters scrapping because it’ll “put life in the team”. It reminds me of circus bears. Two good players settling their differences is fine. Orchestrated bouts, no.

So saying “some of you” is ok but not with the word people

Fighting allows the players to police themselves And, like it or not, promotes honour among the players.

Funny how he will never drop his gloves with his favorite Flame though!!! He wants other to do his dirty work since he’s the biggest rat of them all. POS Doughty

There will always be meatheads

Facts .

You can blame the refs for that

Snowflake NHL...

I love the uniqueness of hockey. One of the reasons is because it allows fighting. It's such a strange thing to allow to happen in the middle of an otherwise completely different sport. I think that's awesome.

this is funny cuz this rat won't drop the gloves with Chucky😂

I'm all for fighting, agree with him. Funny it comes from a guy with 1 career fight who won't drop the gloves with Tkachuk.

Allowing fighting will eventually be a huge financial liability for the NHL. What they need to do, is penalized the meatheads and rats appropriately.

Disagree. Once fighting is outlawed, teams will change the type of player they employ.
