Progressives lost their minds and Trudeau pounced with glee as it was revealed the Conservatives intend to make major spending cuts, if elected

SURREY, B.C. – Andrew Scheer unveiled his party platform on the Friday afternoon of a long weekend in Tsawwassen, B.C., with the Georgia Strait lapping up behind him.Progressive Canada noticed and proceeded to lose its mind, as it was revealed the Conservatives intend to make major spending cuts, if elected.

That didn’t stop Justin Trudeau from pouncing on the announcement with glee. “The Conservatives are proposing $53 billion of cuts and they waited until the Friday night of a long weekend before sharing the platform,” he said at an event on Simon Fraser University campus in Surrey. This is a very different philosophy from the Liberal Party under Paul Martin, who believed spending decisions should not be paid for with debt passed on to the next generation.

The move came in for criticism from then Business Council of Canada chief executive John Manley, who pointed out that it was not prudent to allow spending to consume additional revenue generated by windfall growth. Trudeau talks about “investment” rather than “spending” but a scan of the commitments in this election budget reveal a number of expensive pledges that are unlikely to generate productivity growth – the $150 million a year “learn to camp” program, for example.

IvisonJ In this article, you said Harper paid off $37B of debt between 2006 and 2008, yet the Frasier Institute study linked clearly shows debt going UP while Harper was in office. Where are you getting your numbers

chris_reynolds Actually...it is

It might be more credible if it didn’t also promise tax cuts. Historically conservative govt have added more to the deficit. I don’t have a party, I’d simply like a more practical plan. 5 year promise is also questionable

Conservatives are liars. Their 'fiscal responsibility' is a myth to cover their real objective: largesse for the rich, austerity for everyone else.

You say that now. Wait till he cuts even more than ford while increasing the deficit even more than Trudeau with rich tax cuts. Ford and Scheer have the same goals.

Then why is Scheer's plan to keep increasing the debt?

Exactly

Virtually every household, company and nation on the planet has debt, it’s almost unavoidable. The trick is keeping it to a reasonable level as ratio to income/GDP. CDA’s is VG. SLOWLY, SMARTLY improving THE RATIO is smart. Rapid cuts for elections are a proven disaster.

I definitely support reducing the debt as long as it only hurts others and not me!!!

IvisonJ Yes it is.

No retirement at 67 No Women's uterus belong to women not to an American Sheer as not his place in Canada.

It's bad that most canadians don't understand national debt. But it's even worse that the media perpetuates myths. elxn43

IvisonJ Conservatives should be ridiculed when they say they are fiscally responsible.

How about taxing the rich? Never seems to come up in conversations about the deficit 🤔

As a goal okay! As a pledge its just more con on the backs of working Canadians. Harper blew it the same pledge! Scheer is just carrying the con forward!!

IvisonJ Believe someone reported that if you took the Federal Debt an combined Provinces Debt, we are close to Italy GDP. From what PBO stated CPC_HQ budgeted platform,it is well costed. Trudeau has demonstrated no ability to analyze the economy.

It is if your a Soros acolyte!

Apparently Butts and Trudeau think it is.

Look around at all the provinces in Canada? Trudeau wants them to ignore their debts? Is he going to cover them?

IvisonJ And why are we spending no time about the qualifications / past of candidates running to be PM? Have we just given up on talent? Feel like this has been glossed over and then we are surprised when candidates don’t understand economic policy or mishandle complex situations.

Thank you IvisonJ - spot on.

No it but do it middle class working class back . Is also not be reticule too . Common senses cut . Not cuts that conservative do believe in . Geeeee kind sound like what Ford doing . Shreer will do . Can you hypocrite

IvisonJ Lol

Butts says Conservatives “don’t know the difference between spending and investment”. That’s because, in the world of Liberals, there is no difference between spending and investment. This is easily illustrated by asking a Liberal, what spending is not “investment”? cdnpoli

Dude, context. Debt as a percentage of gdp is dropping & current long term rates are 1.6% for 30 year term. The returns on investing now will pay off the new debt and help pay off Harper’s existing debt. Conservatives really need to start learning the basics of finance.

Not ridiculed, but something that can be done on a gradual basis while still investing in your country and its people. That idea simply escapes the Conservative brain!

John - don’t you know Canada doesn’t just have Maple Trees, it has Money Trees and the Liberals are gonna plant 2 Billion more of them! Because we need billions and cajillions to keep our spending promises...budgetsbalancethemselves

It should because they never actually do reduce it. They cut services and yet still manage to raise the debt. When they say reduce the debt they mean austerity for the working class to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy.

The 'Ford effect': cut now and roll back the cuts a year from now when you realized the crappy job you did... That is the Post ideal...

Unless its BS

As usual, IvisonJ of a little fast and loose with the facts. Crediting Harper with paying down 13 billion towards the debt in 2006 when he was only in power for 7 weeks. That was all due to Paul Martin. Nice try IvisonJ

John Ivison—tell that to Harper who drove it up.

No problem. Tell people what your going to cut. Be honest.

Say that to Ontario. ScheerCuts

Sensible analysis IvisonJ TrudeauMustGo

Exactly and the Liberals don’t have a goal to balance the budget or reduce Canada’s debt, just keep increasing it.

If it's your only goal I think it kind of is.

Canada’s economy gains 54,000 jobs, blowing past expectations and pushing jobless rate down to 5.5%Canada's economy gains 54,000 jobs, blowing past expectations and pushing jobless rate down to 5.5% Shows we don’t need China. Reduce ties and don’t develop any reliance on that country. We lost 21,000 private sector jobs, hired a pile of new government workers... that’s NOT good news... Why leave it to way down in the story to show that the majority were public sector jobs? These should be stripped out to show a clearer picture of the economy.
