.IvisonJ: Leaders’ debate joins Ontario’s PC-Liberal enduring ping pong match in progress via nationalpost

In the first week of the Ontario election campaign, the NDP ran an ad called “ping pong” that featured a generic, besuited Conservative playing table-tennis with a similarly attired Liberal. “They’ve been playing the same game for years but no matter who wins, Ontarians lose. It’s time to change the game,” said Andrea Horwath, the NDP’s leader.

Conservative leader Doug Ford repeatedly charged that the former Liberal government “chased 300,000 jobs out of the province” and berated Del Duca for his performance as transportation minister in Kathleen Wynne’s government. “You had your chance,” he said.Article content However, Del Duca has done a good job highlighting the affordability issue, touting some eye-catching election baubles like removing HST on prepared meals, $1 transit trips and free breakfasts for students.

While Horwath went after Ford’s leadership during the pandemic — “He didn’t want to spend the money to help our kids,” she said — Del Duca focused on the future and lessons that need to be learned. The impression that Del Duca is the progressive standard-bearer is supported by the latest Nanos Research poll, which suggests that Ford is seen as the preferred premier with 29 per cent support, ahead of Del Duca, who is up seven points since the last poll at 24 per cent, and Horwath at 20 per cent .

On stage in North Bay, Ford seemed to realize that he can’t remain stuck in cruise control and took his first opportunity to label all three of his opponents as being serial tax-hikers.Article content

Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca unveils housing strategy, releases fully costed election platformTaking aim at the skyrocketing cost and tight supply of housing, the Ontario Liberals would allow owners of two-storey houses to turn them into three apartments and bring back rent control if elected June 2. Why would anyone trust these charlatans? What’s the incentive to be a landlord when you’re trying to demonize them on the other hand? Rent controls don’t work. The fact that we don’t have enough apartments is proof. Lots of caveats. Does his class size cap include requisite costs to build more classrooms? Does he mention how he will come up with 10,000 classrooms? Seems to be pie in the sky to be completed within four years. Which means his balancing the budget promise is also not possible.
