Five-time cancer survivor Patti Moore offers up her easy sugar cookie and royal icing recipe

Patti Moore is known for going all out with her special holiday cookies, including these Charlie Brown-themed cookies. - ContributedTRURO, N.S. — One of the best parts of the holiday season is the desserts. There's always an excuse to chow down on anything from penny sweets to Cuban lunches to fancy-decorated cookies.

“We always did our Christmas baking on the first Saturday and Sunday of December while watching the Christmas Daddies show,” said Moore. “Since the early age of eight, I took private art lessons, where I learned about this idea,” said Arseneau. “We did it every Christmas in my class taught by Cape Breton artist Marie Moore.”“She always had a shower cap on her head to keep flour out, I would use a pair of clean underwear,” Arseneau said, laughing. “I hope to pass the underwear tradition on to my son.

Christmas sweaters are a big part of the season, so Patti Moore created Christmas sweater cookies, featuring detailed, intricate designs. - Contributed“I make a vanilla sugar cookie with almond royal icing,” said Moore. “I’ve perfected this cookie, so usually that’s the only one I make. I do want to try a gingerbread sugar cookie, I think I’ll attempt that this year. I also can make a mean chocolate chip cookie.

“At Christmas, I love to make these little sets of 'Christmas Eve' cookies. It’s a 'bottle of milk' and a 'chocolate chip cookie,' sugar cookies, with little faces and bows."“I make anything and everything. Being a self-taught home baker, who is still learning, it’s more about the fun than perfection," Moore says.“I like doing the red truck with the tree on the back the most,” said Arseneau, who does anything that’s winter or Christmas-themed.

“Don’t overthink the process or expect perfection, ever. The online examples are usually people who studied for years to perfect it. So don’t get discouraged. Also, it’s always meant to be fun. Keep the inner child close to the surface when you’re 'cookie-ing'," she says.
