“It’s dangerous,” Ms. Merritt, who performs under the name Iva, told The Globe and Mail. “They seem to have no concern over the issue of cultural appropriation within the Indigenous community.”The bone of contention has to do with Cikwes, a First Nations singer and songwriter who sings in Cree and English. She also dabbles in throat singing, a form of musical performance unique to the Inuit culture.
“Appropriation can happen internally within our pan-Indigenous umbrella,” she tweeted on March 27. “Inuit throat songs are not just sounds or vocalizations, they carry our history and culture,” she tweeted two days later. “If you like Inuit throat singing, please hire Inuit throat singers.”

Don't hear anyone upset that they're 'appropriating' someone else's musical heritage. But someone does a native song/dance or dresses in anything 'indiginous' and everyone gets all bent out of shape. There is no such thing. People should welcome the copying or borrowing from their culture. It’s a great way for it to survive.

It's nothing but empty virtue signaling anyway. And if you listen to some of those acknowledgements, they mention several tribes. How could multiple tribes 'own' the same piece of land? This is about respect and living out the recommendations from the TRC. Every conference, every meeting I've been to in Ottawa for the last several years begins with it. Anything that reminds me that I'm part of a larger whole is a good way to start the day.
