Inuit musicians boycott Indigenous Music Awards over cultural appropriation concerns GlobeArts

Tanya Tagaq performs during the Polaris Music Prize gala in Toronto on Sept. 18, 2017. Ms. Tagaq is among other Inuit musicians who have pledged to withdraw their future participation in the annual event.Concerned over perceived cultural appropriation, a group of Inuit musicians that includes Polaris Prize winner Tanya Tagaq have announced they are boycotting the Indigenous Music Awards.

“It’s dangerous,” Ms. Merritt, who performs under the name Iva, told The Globe and Mail. “They seem to have no concern over the issue of cultural appropriation within the Indigenous community.”The bone of contention has to do with Cikwes, a First Nations singer and songwriter who sings in Cree and English. She also dabbles in throat singing, a form of musical performance unique to the Inuit culture.

“Appropriation can happen internally within our pan-Indigenous umbrella,” she tweeted on March 27. “Inuit throat songs are not just sounds or vocalizations, they carry our history and culture,” she tweeted two days later. “If you like Inuit throat singing, please hire Inuit throat singers.”

GlobeArts Throat singers complaining about another throat singer sounds more like professional jealousy to me

GlobeArts Pretty good example of why it’s so hard to consult or negotiate with FN’s, 600 bands and no two think alike.

GlobeArts Cultural appropriation is a great way for cultures to survive.

GlobeArts What, they're annoyed at Cikwes using white man's technology, like microphones, fabrics, autos, airplanes, dentistry, medicine that works, chemistry, physics and just about every fucking thing that keeps those idiots alive past age 25? That cultural appropriation?

GlobeArts Probably just want to stay home so they can club more seals.

GlobeArts I feel sad for the few dozen people watching the awards show - they are going to miss them!

Several artists boycott Indigenous Music Awards over cultural appropriation concernsMusicians pledged not to participate in the awards until the organization revises its policies or includes Inuit representation on its board I've seen lots of native artists playing country music, or the blues, or rock. Don't hear anyone upset that they're 'appropriating' someone else's musical heritage. But someone does a native song/dance or dresses in anything 'indiginous' and everyone gets all bent out of shape. There is no such thing. People should welcome the copying or borrowing from their culture. It’s a great way for it to survive.

‘A course of political correctness’: Ontario town votes against acknowledging they are on Indigenous landCoun. West, who tabled the original motion, said land acknowledgments are increasingly common as a direct offshoot of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission I think my response is better expressed through song. Must be members of the CPC_HQ Or am I wrong? Asking for Jody Wilson and Calamity Jane Phillmypot. Good for them. Awesome.

Richmond Hill, Ont., rejects motion to open council meetings with Indigenous land acknowledgmentA councillor in the Ontario town first tabled the idea at a meeting in February, only to encounter pushback from councillors and see the motion deferred to a later date Maybe we should all start our day with the acknowledgement that each of our homes stand on traditional Indigenous territories. cdnpoli reconciliation Good! It's nothing but empty virtue signaling anyway. And if you listen to some of those acknowledgements, they mention several tribes. How could multiple tribes 'own' the same piece of land? This is about respect and living out the recommendations from the TRC. Every conference, every meeting I've been to in Ottawa for the last several years begins with it. Anything that reminds me that I'm part of a larger whole is a good way to start the day.
