The cost for Toronto to host up to five matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has increased to at least $60 million per game

the estimate has increased by about $10 million due to “recent escalation in inflation rates.”

The federal and provincial governments are expected to pay two-thirds or about $184 million of the cost. When the City of Toronto initially expressed interest in hosting games back in 2018, the cost to taxpayers was estimated between $30 and $45 million. FIFA requires men’s world cup stadiums to hold a minimum of 45,000 fans, meaning BMO Field will need a significant expansion of at least 15,000 temporary seats.

But we can’t afford to house people

Like before, probably QEW HOV or any HOV will required more than 2 people to ride, traffic will be cu cu crazy 🤪, parking cost to the roof (already is), Toronto will be in 'avoid, do not go list'

TOR NTO

Can't wef help out? They have most of our tax dollars now it's been rinsed through Ukraine.

Well, that is silly. There are far better uses for $300 million in this city. Just say No.

How much affordable housing would $300mil pay for? How much help could be given to mental health programs, addiction programs, and to help the homeless? Who is asleep at the wheel?

waste of money. this is council and tory ego spending taxpayer money

we all triple the return.

Meanwhile

Get it done. They’ll sell that in hotdogs and beer alone

BicycleRob How can anyone from govt look into a taxpayers eye & justify $60mill per game? This is a joke!

What a surprise NOT look at Japan’s Olympic bid.

We put temporarily put natural turf in Rogers Centre in 2010 for European soccer matches. Why can we not do that again and save money with not doing BMO field retrofits?

Fuck that. $300 MILLION for soccer, while LTC Homes STILL don't have A/C. People are STILL dying of over doses etc etc etc.

Toronto World Cup ⚽️ cost is just ridiculous - absolutely a waste of huge money - why

Worth it.

JohnTory fordnation JustinTrudeau do not waste taxpayers money for 5 games. instead of FIFAWorldCup in TOronto making affordable housing and shelters for abused Women & homeless. Toronto is world class that not need to pay millions $ to get attention & business canpolit

Another vanity project for the attention freak in the Mayor's Office.

300m that could go towards homelessness or other social programs to help people.

Looks like ticket prices will be ASTRONOMICAL !

Just say it will cost $700M.

Waste of taxpayers $. Fix the problems we got going first! Gas, grocery etc. who gives a crap about FIFA!

Which is why they bare pausing capital projects.

Taxpayers are footing the bill. Who benefits financially? Who gets the revenue for the games?

Another sink hole for money

Never mind the cost, we deserve this. It's time to put Canada on the soccer map. Think about taring down BMO field and do a complete rebuild!!

Fifa will have fleeced us for at least a billion before 2026 rolls up...

😂 😂 😂 And who paying for this? Prob our taxes.

That money should be put towards healthcare

cityofhamilton TheSpec and JohnPaulDanko - are you paying attention re support for future games. Ratepayers cannot afford your continued needles spending & tax hikes.

I’ll sleep in my car and charge people 1000 per night to stay in my place 😂

It’s okay it’s not like kids need books or school resources or anything like that.

if the improved facilities can be converted for local resident use afterwards then I think it should be fine and would add to the sports infrastructure in the city

No!!! I'm shocked! Never saw that coming.

So many uneducated people complaining

Toronto is spending $300,000,000+ on 5 World Cup games and tens of millions on private security in public parks to play whac-a-mole with houseless people, but doesn’t seem to have a penny for affordable housing or money basic maintenance of city facilities and public housing.

So excited!!! Going to buy tickets for sure

Wait till 2026. It will be $120M / game thanks to the incompetent city council

All that money and Toronto still doesn’t have a proper stadium to host a WC match.

Justin Trudeau and John Tory believe Canada has unlimited funds. Both of them have to get their heads out of the sand.

Yet we can't care for our own residents.

Please use it for housing homeless, then maybe give bags of cash out to other city residents after. Let's get real folks, they're kicking a ball around.

Yet' they are sending millions to Ukraine, basically Russians r fighting Russians 🤔

Imagine how many homeless people could be fed, given assistance to start a better life with that money. But sure, let's invest taxpayer money in a two hour sporting event.

Are we making more than $60 million per game ?

Toronto doesn't have a stadium large enough for a FIFA event.

Corporations will get rich, and this city will go bankrupt. Way to go Toronto, you've signed off on your own demise.

That $1315 ticket based on 45k seating just to break even. I guess many will not be able to enjoy the beautiful game even though we all contributed, in taxes, for this event.

Biggest sporting event in the world. 60 million per game is a bargain

More free money for Toronto

Somebody’s making a ton of cash.

This is stupid

John Tory and Doug Ford have reserved their front row seats .

60=180 experts predict

Worth it for the 8th most popular sport in Canada

NO

Itll be closer to $100 mill when its all said and done

Who cares . We are idiots and willing to pay .

If inflation increased the cost of hosting wouldn't that increase the net economic benefit as well?

So if the estimate now is $60 million per game, the real cost will be $120 million per game. Taxpayers really screwed over here. No way economic 'benefits' will recover half these costs. Guess where the shortfall comes from? Toronto topoli Ontario

Time to demand FIFA the IOC etc. pay for the facilities.

Show us the math.

Ha! Great. Now they just have to expand that mickey mouse stadium from its current capacity of about 100 seats, and wait for the money to roll in....keeping in mind that we'll probably get games featuring Faroe Islands, Chad and Bahrain. Good luck, Toronto!

Ohhhh but we don’t have money to fix the cities homelessness…. And housing crisis…. But we got money for these games…. Lmao wait tillthey gotta pick up the cleaning bill.

Expect nice hefty tax increases to pay for this stupidity.

What a waste of taxpayer money.

Sport and tourism are super valuable to a culture. Maybe we can slow down building bike lanes so we can have a world class event.

Remember folks, this is a city that is totally incompetent when it comes to money. This will balloon to $500 million before it done. Maybe they’ll recover half and then the poor tax payers will pick up the balance.

Yeah, what ever!!

So ticket prices will be going up.

I’m sure we’ve got some of the *billion received from the fed gvmt that can pay for it, since we have no idea where it went, right? fordnation onpoli

Just a reminder that Pan Am games cost 2.5 Billion, went 342M over budgets.. Execs still got their 5mil dollar bonuses and... besides money laundering and pocket stuffing, money were lost...

People are starving and dying on the streets of Toronto and they're going to waste this much money 60 million don't you have a great mayor of your city

And

This kind of reporting is why we can't have anything nice. Focus on the benefits.

I'll offer my back yard for half that

The least you can do is improve (widen) that underground tunnel from BMO Field to the Go Train Westbound train after the game. It's the bottleneck chaos of hell.

How is that even possible, show me the quote

Oh man probably it's worth it, but still some of the homeless people are still sleeping outdoors...🤗

Investment

I predict a significant loss. I don’t see how this will drive revenue. I’m open to being wrong, but BMO is a small field and I suspect it will be filled with Torontonians, so hotels/restaurants likely aren’t going to see a significant bump.

So what's the problem

TV rights....

My property tax has doubled in the past few years. Why? To pay for stupid shit like this and thousands of new bike lanes and stop signs to snarl traffic even further in this city.

Taxpayers are big suckers.

If there was ever a proposal for the City of Toronto that deserved the phrase 'not economically feasible'... this would be it. I'm sick of seeing my hometown being treated like a cash register to a convenience store to a parade of mayors & city councils for the past 20+ years.

An absolutely obscene expenditure.

Well worth it

Yeah, and now report how much money they’ll make… it’s an investment

lots of little brown envelopes ..... that's why 💡😉

They will make up the money with sponsorship and business it will bring into the city. Worth it

Costly estimate for city-sanctioned encampments in Edmonton raises concerns for one councillor - Edmonton | Globalnews.caThe possibility of Edmonton having city-sanctioned encampments this summer to house vulnerable people is now looking out of reach because of high estimated costs. $2.1 million, 60 people, 3 months. That’s about $11,500 per person per month. For tents. Do they just pull these numbers out of thin air? $2000 per month would pay for a small apartment. I get there are housing shortages but surely this makes no sense… 🤷‍♀️ Is the estimate of concern or the expenses ?
