Hunt is on for drugs that hit COVID-19 where it’s most vulnerable GlobeTechnology

Many copies of the virus are released to infect other cellsA coronavirus get its name from the forest of proteins that stick out of its viral envelope like the points on a crown. These are its spike proteins. In COVID-19, they bind to a receptor on the surfaces of cells known as ACE2 . It’s the lock-and-key system by which the virus first latches onto and then gains entry into its target.

In Ottawa, Dr. Langlois is leading a different project that includes looking at ways to intercept the virus using its affinity for ACE2. But he notes that the risk of this approach is that the virus will eventually evolve a slightly different spike protein tip against which decoys are less effective.

Drugs called “protease inhibitors” are designed to do just that. Two such drugs, called ritonavir and lopinavir, have previously been used in combination to combat HIV. Now they are among the antivirals that are being tested in Canada as part of the Solidarity trial. The copying is done by another viral enzyme called polymerase, which draws on the cell’s raw materials to build new RNA. One way to defeat it is to feed the polymerase with incorrectly shaped building blocks that stop the process just like a paper jam stops a photocopier. The drug remdesivir, originally developed by the California-based pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences to treat Ebola, is an example of this strategy.

COVID-19 costly to NFL draft prospects needing face time with teams - Sportsnet.ca“It’s really been up to the individual teams, and the agents and the players to find a way to get us all of the information that we require.” The COVID-19 pandemic is denying NFL teams the opportunity to get valuable face time with draft prospects. Poor babies. So what you’re saying is that billionaires can’t get in front of future millionaires...hmmm.

Ontario now has 200 COVID-19 deaths; provincial case count climbs to 5,759BREAKING: Ontario now has 200 COVID-19 deaths; provincial case count climbs to 5,759 A virus has accomplished what the war on manufactured terror was unable to pull off—driving us with nary a bleat of complaint toward the rocks of economic and social destruction. Getting the testing up so we can end this nonsense. Also how is it even possible to confirm these 200 are accurate? Are they coronavirus caused? Coronavirus complications? Or people that died while testing positive? We need daily updates on the number of people being tested. The numbers of infected is useless without this information. We don’t know if the increase is due infection rates or testing rates. Journalists need to up their game. We depend on you.

Ontario now recommends COVID-19 tests for all long-term care residents being transferred into homesNew guidance reverses a previous policy that said only patients with symptoms should be tested This is overdue but still not close to what is required. All long-term care residents & staff, symptomatic or not, need to be tested. Repeatedly. You can’t save those who you cannot identify. And new residents be put into quarantine (infection control protocols put in place) until results return. Didn't think they could admit to a home new residents if there was an outbreak and that should be followed to the letter. Warmer weather won't have big impact on slowing COVID-19: expertsPreliminary research has suggested that warmer temperatures may help to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, but experts warn that doesn’t reduce the need for physical distancing measures as pandemics don’t behave the same way as seasonal outbreaks. We should be okay by July then....maybe.
