The vote comes as a culmination of months of wrangling by Hungary’s allies to convince its nationalist government to lift its block on Sweden’s membership

Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson shakes hands with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban at the Carmelite Monastery in Budapest, Hungary, on Feb 23.Hungary’s parliament voted Monday to ratify Sweden’s bid to join NATO, ending more than 18 months of delays that frustrated the alliance as it sought to expand in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said his country was “now leaving 200 years of neutrality and non-alignment behind us.” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told the Associated Press that the vote “makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer and all of us more secure.” “Hungary is a sovereign country. It does not tolerate being dictated by others, whether it be the content of its decisions or their timing,” he said.

“Having Sweden as a NATO ally will make the United States even safer,” she said, speaking aboard Air Force One as President Joe Biden flew to New York for an appearance.
