Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says every NATO member will likely have to meet the military alliance's target for defence spending as the showdown with Russia unfolds. He made the remarks, without directly criticizing Canada, following a meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Warsaw.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, right, address the media following their talk on European security in Warsaw, Poland, on Monday.
Canada has been under increasing public pressure from allies — such as the United States and the secretary general of NATO — to lay out a plan to meet the two per cent of GDP target. This could require the federal government to invest perhaps as much as $18 billion a year more on top of the roughly $28.9 billion that's already being appropriated.
"So, the simplest answer is that we all, with no exceptions, fulfil those requirements," Tusk said. "It's not because some politician wants it or not. It's because it's our commitment, so we should do it."In a message mostly directed to Poland's European allies,Tusk also said it's important for NATO countries to exceed Russia's defence capacity.
"We know there is more to do and we are doing it," Trudeau said, while noting the Liberal government's recent string of equipment announcements, including the purchase of F-35 fighters from the U.S. The governing Liberals proposed to create a single government organization — Defence Procurement Canada — to "ensure that Canada's biggest and most complex defence procurement projects are delivered on time and with greater transparency to Parliament."
