That number is more than one-and-a-half times as much as B.C. and Ontario combined, whose taxpayers pitched in $54.6 billion and $97.9 billion respectively, the other two largest net contributors to the federal balance sheet.
The numbers from Statistics Canada show that Alberta’s $240 billion comes to about $5,000 a year — for 11 years — for Alberta’s taxpayers. “Far more tax revenue comes to Ottawa from Albertans than what comes back to Alberta in terms of federal services and transfers.” The Statistics Canada numbers also show Quebec benefitted most from the equalization program, raking in $107.5 billion. The program shuffles federal tax dollars to provinces with less money so all Canadians have comparable public services at comparable taxation levels.
“Albertans have been working for Ottawa for too long, it’s time for Ottawa to start working for us,” Kenney declared in a speech to the Alberta Manning Networking Conference. “We Albertans will not lose our heads, we are practical people, we are not unreasonable people. Nothing we are asking for is unreasonable.”
Alberta needs to keep bitching and moaning like Quebec has done for years. Constantly threatening separation (wish they had the guts to actually do it) seemed to work for them.
The first line was nonsense. It goes downhill from there.
We all pay income taxes including those in have not provinces. Per person equalization is highest in Maritimes but everyone always picks on QC because of their population size. When Alberta first became a province it was poor and received federal subsidies. 🤷♂️
Ok, here is what Quebec does with that money, the money goes directly into the general fund. They don't use that money for Health, education or any other programs as they should do. To me as a tax payer in Quebec I believe the transfer payments should go to the programs for it.
NL hasn’t had equalization payments in a long time.
Yeah and Alberta's oil and sand industry is getting billions of dollars in subsidies from the federal gov paid in part by Quebec's taxpayers.
Lol, they probably won’t run this story in Quebec, Quebec denies getting any money from Alberta, we all have known for years where Quebec based Liberal PM’s send Alberta money. But the gutless Jason Kenny won’t turn of the tap.
Per capita, Manitoba (a Western province I think.....) is getting more EP than Québec Yukon, also located in the West, is getting 10 times more tranfer of paiement per capita than Québec
Nice work not mentioning that is was The Harper Conservatives gov, Kenney among them. That brought in a new equalization formula with the 2007 budget that will last until 2024. Bunch of fken hacks.
Yeah... non...
Canada would be screwed without Alberta, Ottawa should start supporting the west more than he does, talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
So Harper didn't fix this?
Quebec is a province of moochers.
The National Post should be renamed the Alberta Post, this story has appeared half a dozen times over many weeks in my twitter feed.
No pipeline across Canada, Alberta can cry all it wants.
'Let's look for stories that promote divisiveness amongst Canadians AND promote CPC propaganda...' editorial meeting at National Post.
Why are you intentionally fuelling separatist fires with this kind of misinformation. All provinces inhabitants pay income taxes. When a province has a booming industry, the incomes are higher, meaning higher tax revenue. It’s NOT an interprovincial payment! abpoli ableg
Nice propaganda. You make it sound like Alberta is directly giving money to Quebec. When it is in fact, all tax payers (even the ones in Quebec) in the country giving the money to the federal gov. and it's the gov. that sends the money to the provinces.
I think you mean taxes collected from federal income taxpayers who live in Alberta are used by the federal government in other provinces who need the support.
When you look at all the issues facing this country. Pipelines, autism, foreign aid There is only so much money to go around. governments in other provinces are forced to put signage, and government docs in both languages when no French people are even living there.....
It’s time for a national referendum on the official languages of Canada. It would be a trillion dollar savings if we went English only. Makes sense
Did you change the name of your rag to Albertan Post?
AndrewScheer JustinTrudeau jkenney
It won’t be the first time and it won’t be the last time.
How many times does it need to be explained before the rest of the country realizes why Albertans aren’t particularly happy with this situation. It’s not surprising the people benefiting from the current situation refuse to admit it might not be fair.
Does Quebec also benefit from Carbon tax rebates?
Not good it’s about time Quebec gets the same as everyone else. In fact as we have involved into a diverse country there likely isn’t a need for two official language in Canada...... just English
Klein ruined Alberta's economy.
How’s the SNC scandal going? We know all this.
And Bombastic Kenny plays on.
By the comments it’s clear that facts don’t matter to the left. Tell them something you believe - you’re wrong. Follow up with facts - you’re still wrong. Why are we wrong? - AHHHHHHH YOU’RE WRONG THATS WHY.
This is the worst kind of journalism that could exist. Why are you so devoted to causing rifts in Canada?
fern_60 Cool. Now do CPP.
Latest StatsCan total reported income by province. Does not include underground economy. Quebec produced 1.59 times the income Alberta did. Quebec 21.1% pays more into the equalization on $296.8 B than Alberta 13.3% on $187 Billions cdnpoli AbLeg
You guys are shameless in promoting the UCP's talking points. You know damn well that's not how transfer payments work. Wonder what your story will be when Kenny kills the golden goose and Alberta will need the prosperity of other provinces to stay afloat.
