The Ontario government announced more COVID-19 restrictions on Monday due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, saying the province will return to a modified Step 2 of the reopening plan.

Premier Doug Ford announced the new measures during a news conference as hospitalizations due to COVID-19 and case counts increased across the province.

Retail settings, including shopping malls, will be permitted at 50 per cent capacity. For shopping malls, physical distancing will be required in line-ups and food courts will be required to close. Indoor dining at restaurants, bars and other food or drink establishments will no longer be permited. Outdoor dining with restrictions, takeout, drive through and delivery is permitted.

Museums, galleries, zoos, science centres, landmarks, historic sites, botanical gardens and similar attractions, amusement parks and waterparks, tour and guide services and fairs, rural exhibitions, and festivals will all close. Outdoor establishments will be permitted to open with restrictions and with spectator occupancy, where applicable, limited to 50 per cent capacity.

I would expect smarter restrictions, like criteria for fully vaccinated. If restrictions are the same as before vaccines why did people get all those shots? Banning basketball is understandable but banning tennis is non-sense. come on fordnation OntarioHealthOH be smarter

How about dunk tanks? Are drunk tanks open?

Watch out for the angry mothers who don't have their free overpaid babysitter to drop their kids off to. Heaven forbid they have to spend some extra time with their kids. You've been warned.

Two great things about Omicron: 1) It's a mild infection and cases will decline as fast as they grew. 2) Studies have shown that an Omicron infection infers immunization for Delta (up to 400% increased immunity).

Close the businesses that require vaccinations to enter...doesn't make sense

Thanks DOUG - now that kids are not in school, hospitals and care homes face even MORE employee shortages as people scramble for child care, when schools have been closed for the sake of a virus that has almost no impact on healthy kids - aside from extreme mental health agony.

Ridiculous, dumb and will destroy businesses and jobs even more

Say whatever you will about him but on this one he was spot on.

Ontario reports 16,714 new COVID-19 cases, warns data is an underestimatePublic Health Ontario reports 195 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care homes, 74 in hospitals and 70 in retirement homes A gross underestimate in fact. We must act as our own circuit breaker. A ten work day halt would slow down the spread and allow hospitals and schools time to put tighter controls and plans in place. Our government has failed us. It’s up to us now.
