Johnathan Huberdeau will stay with the Flames for eight more years after being the center\u002Dpiece of the Matthew Tkachuk trade

Huberdeau, who racked up a league-leading 85 assists this past season, was acquired less than two weeks ago as part of the blockbuster trade that landed Matthew Tkachuk in Florida. He was slated to be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Huberdeau, who turned 29 in June, is now locked up through the end of the 2030-31 campaign. For a fan-base that was rocked by the off-season departures of both Johnny Gaudreau and Tkachuk, this commitment to stay put in Calgary will make the new guy in No. 10 an immediate favourite. Huberdeau jerseys should be flying off the rack at local retailers.Article content

“We just made a trade for the guy and to me, you have to get to know each other,” Treliving said Tuesday, another productive day that ended with new contracts for forward Andrew Mangiapane and defenceman Oliver Kylington. “He doesn’t know who I am and I’d never met Jonathan before, so it just gives us a chance to learn a little bit about each other and get to know each other and build a relationship and give him a little insight into what we’re thinking about the team.
