Johnathan Huberdeau will stay with the Flames for eight more years after being the center\u002Dpiece of the Matthew Tkachuk trade

Just three days after general manager Brad Treliving travelled to Montreal for a meet-and-greet meal with Jonathan Huberdeau, the Calgary Flames signed the star left-winger to an eight-year extension with an annual cap-hit of US$10.5 million. Completed late Thursday, it is the largest contract in Flames’ franchise history.

During his introductory Zoom call, Huberdeau told reporters he was “open to staying in Calgary for a long time.”“We are excited to extend Jonathan long-term in Calgary,” Treliving said in Thursday’s announcement . “He is an elite player, one of the premier forwards in the league who makes players around him better. We look forward to welcoming Jonathan to our community and his contributions to our team’s success.

In an interview earlier this week, Treliving explained the purpose of his whirlwind trip to Montreal to dine with the prized acquisition. An eight-year, US$84-million deal — the exact same terms that Gaudreau was offered before he ultimately bolted for Columbus as a free agent — is a dandy dessert.
