Flames forward Sean Monahan will have season-ending surgery on his hip.

This is the second time Monahan will have surgery for a hip injury after his 2020-21 season was cut short for a procedure on his other hip. The Flames will place the 27-year-old on long-term injured reserve.

Monahan has struggled this season with eight goals and 23 points in 65 games. The former sixth overall pick from the 2013 NHL Draft saw his role diminished as he was put on the fourth line by head coach Darryl Sutter. “He’s battled some things and it’s unfortunate. The good news here is that he’s got a lot of time to get this addressed, Treliving said about Monahan. “He had his other hip, his left hip, done last year and it feels great. He’s doing wonderful with it. This is now sort of the next challenge for him. So he’s got a lot of time to get it addressed before next year, but no question. A great deal of disappointment.
