The Tsawout First Nation is proceeding with an injunction against some of its own community members who, since March 17, have stood in the way of logging activity on Saturna Island.
Dan Claxton, one of the three individuals named in the injunction, declined Tuesday to comment until he had a chance to talk to legal counsel. “All we’re wanting is that the logs are treated properly, that they get scaled and stamped on site,” said Nick Claxton, who wasn’t directly named in the injunction. “Then the question on our mind is what is the value of that raw timber, and if it’s viable, the project stops there.”
However, Underwood said councillors believe they have significant support in the community to generate revenue from the property, based on previous decisions. Three blocks of the reserve property, labelled A, B, and C, were identified in the plan. Underwood said that council, at a meeting last Thursday, agreed to stop at Block A and not proceed without more community consultation.
