Public servants returning to the office after several years working from home are adjusting to a new emphasis: shared work spaces, rather than a cubicle to call their own.

But as the executive responsible for 6.2 million square metres of federal office space across 103 departments and agencies, he's confident workers will all have the space they need by the March 31 deadline.

The federal public service has been growing quickly since the Liberals took power in 2015, and reached 254,309 employees in 2022, according to Treasury Board statistics.Even as numbers grow, not all buildings or floors are open. Several towers at the Portage III complex in GatineauThe Canada Revenue Agency's Taxation Data Centre Complex on Ottawa's Heron Road will close for construction in January 2024 and the agency says some 1,850 employees will move to temporary offices elsewhere.

"We have a responsibility from a fiscal perspective," said Déry. "We're thinking about how can we maximize our portfolio and ensure that we have flexible space, but that we don't have space that sits dormant."That means if public servants don't have their own desks and are only in the office two to three days per week, the federal government can fit those new hires into their existing offices.

Productivity will be down the tubes.

Presumably because that will help with communicable diseases and transmission. 😂

THEY ARE TRYING TO HAVE ME LOCKED IN LINDSEY CORRECTIONAL CENTRE WHERE THEY HAVE ARRANGED TO HAVE ME MURDERED BY CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS AND INMATES!!!

Shared work spaces.....during a pandemic. Now there's a real Mensa Candidate move if I ever saw one.

And cue the low-hanging fruit of government worker bashing from the perpetual (usually conservative) whiners. But heaven forbid we turn our attention to the price-gouging business owners who are gorging on their highest profit levels in 70 years. Let's blame working people.

that's not going to be great in future pandemics and during normal flu and cold seasons

Honestly, right now there are public servants that work far more than their allotted time. For example, I can count on one hand how many breaks/lunches I’ve actually taken since working remotely. Being at the workplace will allow me to socialize … even though my team isn’t there

Welcome to the corporate world that everyone else is working in. Booking a desk and having a locker is the new norm. Many companies do it. If you don’t want to be in the office full time don’t expect to have a desk sitting waiting for you.

'public servants' a.k.a. government workers with great benefits.

So they have to live like the rest of the world

Several years… 🤡🤡🤡

There wasn't enough office space before Covid hit. When people realize their 'office' is a chair in the hallway they will refuse to come in.

I'd like to add 'typing' to the list

I do hope our Employees survive the ordeal. I am sending thoughts and prayers. And I will light a candle.

So, during covid, while people were at home so as to not spread disease, they renovated the office space to be SHARED, and less singular.. sounds EXACTLY like a government idea.

guess they want a big raise now. !!

The struggle must be unbearable. Oppression!!! Oh and DefundTheCBC

I enjoy hearing from all the trash living paycheque to paycheque (if they are lucky enough to be working) talking sh!t in CBC comments about other workers like they’re the Rockefellers. “They are not suffering enough!” 😂😂😂 PropagandaWorks

None of these spaces are safe with everyone sick and unmasked constantly. It's not worth it nor necessary after years of remote work now. Fix COVID. Covidisnotover

Bye local, friendly, amenity-based economy! Hello, downtown bar-only economy!

Several years? Like a hundred or what?

What are the costs to the taxpayers for redesigning all these workspaces in the Federal Public Service and also are taxpayers getting any savings from this?

So sad having to do your job paid for by the taxpayers 😢

And the reason for that? Perhaps there's so many more of them? Please find out!

Well 10 years ago I arrived at my desk a little late like 10 minutes which was unusual for me but I had a good reason and my desk was occupied by someone else so I not surprised by this.

Spread all the germs!!

Poor things. I work with CG, glad my office is on a ship out in the middle of water, lol. Glad i was able to keep working through this covid crap.

More efficient infection process having people grouped together

Welcome to the rest of the world

Unless you want to be replaced by a foreigner who will gladly do your job for minimim wage, I'd get back to the office.

poor babies. I really feel for them. Next some fool will ask them to work. The stress will be unbearable I'm sure

Will the horror never end

Feedback I’ve heard is that this is incredibly inefficient.

Vaccinated or Unvaxed ? defundCBC

Boo ducking hoo

Like cattle!

Boo hoo! Time for a strike.

About time they went back to work. I have been waiting since November to get correspondence with employment insurance. I don't think they actually worked from home.

Have you been to a service Canada lately? Service should be removed is the saddest way to conduct business ever

Its about time. Bunch of whiners. Everyone else has returned, what makes you so special

Interesting, kinda of funny tho People are hilarious

Am I the only one here that realizes that having public servants work from home saves taxpayers money by cutting down on the need for office space? Is there anyone with a brain in these twitter comments? I mean a ton of private companies have figured this out already.

People should be given the choice to either continue to work remote or return to work in person. Some people are just as productive or more productive at home than in an office. While others can't focus at home and thrive in office environment.

Why the heck did they not return to work when everyone else did?

Cubicles were bad. Shared workspaces are much worse.

'public servants' shall hereby be formally recognized as 'taxpayer leeches' as they serve no one but themselves and who's sole contribution to society is keeping the government alive.

Awwww poor babies. I guess we did not build another 30000 office spaces to house all those public servants JustinTrudeau has hired?

If these dudes don't want to actually work, I'll take the gig. Benifits and a pension? .. Sign me up federal gov.

Incoming strikes

It's only been like less than 3 years. Several years? lol... See how productive people will be in shared services looking at each other.

Alberta will no longer hold federal immigration detainees in provincial jails | CBC NewsThe province says that written notice has been given to the federal government that it is ending an agreement with Canada Border Services Agency to use provincial correctional centres to house people being detained on immigration matters. Leave it to the Liberals to leave people in jail for years who have committed no crime but release those who are violent offenders after a little or no time spent in jail on a simple promise to appear. That's a disgrace. What could possibly be the motive for this decision? Correct they should not be put in jail at our expense, they should be immediately deported...
