Peter Winterburn, a former Vancouver resident who was murdered in Valparaiso, Chile, after two men attempted to steal his backpack, will be remembered for his “zest for life,” and as someone who pushed others to become better, said his former UBC colleague, Craig Hart.“He was there with his family, it was a bright sunny beautiful day, not the time, place or environment where you would expect something like this to happen,” said Hart.
“He’d probably worked in 40 countries, he was competent and adept in different languages and cultures, he’d lived in Santiago and he was capable and comfortable in international environments,” said Hart. “He was always challenging himself, and his students, and by doing so he forced his students to get more out of themselves and their own research projects.”
He will also be remembered for introducing friends to new tastes at their regular wine and cheese gatherings, said Hart.
