Evidence in Toronto officer’s killing paints ‘very different picture’ than politician statements. That evidence won’t become public before the trial, a judge has ruled.

The evidence expected to be heard at Umar Zameer’s trial for the first-degree murder of Toronto police officer“paints a very different picture” from public statements made by the police chief and top politicians, but that evidence won’t become public before the trial, a judge has ruled.

Zameer, 30, was released on strict bail conditions last year after a three-day hearing that included a more-detailed-than-usual examination of the evidence against him, including testimony from the lead investigator, so that the judge could assess the strength of the Crown’s case in making her decision.

Lawyer Nader Hasan argued the public was being misled by comments made by the mayors of Toronto and Brampton and the Premier of Ontario condemning the bail decision and by statements made by Toronto police chief James Ramer in a press conference shortly after Northrup was killed, including that the killing was “intentional and deliberate.”
