There can be no sanctifying grace for anyone who looked away from the dreadful harm caused by sexual abusers wearing a priest’s collar, writes Rosie DiManno.

Pope Benedict XVI, frail and reclusive, may never see the inside of a courtroom, civil or criminal, but one day he’ll have to answer to the Creator he believes in, pray God!

Shame has been an endless theme for the Church and apologia for misdeeds a recurring posture, however sincerely expressed. In a statement that didn’t directly mention Benedict, the Vatican on Thursday said it would evaluate the report and examine the details. Which raises the question now of what to do with the 94-year-old Benedict. He has in the past denied any wrongdoing and did so again to these investigators in an 82-page written response, claiming no knowledge of the cases.

“In a total of four cases, we have come to the conclusion that the then Archbishop Cardinal Ratzinger can be accused of misconduct in cases of sexual abuse. He still claims ignorance even if, in our opinion, that is difficult to reconcile with the documentation.”
