Ottawa’s police service has deeper problems than a failed chief. Chief Peter Sloly was already locked in conflict with much of his force long before the truckers’ convoy rolled into Ottawa. StarEditorial

. If there was any surprise, it’s that he kept his job once it was clear his force had completely bungled its response to the blockade of downtown Ottawa.

Ottawa residents are furious at the failures of their local police force, but the rest of us should be concerned as well. Ottawa police, after all, are the main security force in the national capital. And the problems in their ranks were apparent long before the truckers’ convoy rolled into town. But that’s months away, at the very least. And there’s no need to wait for an inquiry to understand that Sloly was having a rough ride in Ottawa pretty much as soon as he took over in October, 2019.

So there’s plenty of evidence that Sloly was already locked in conflict with much of his force, including in all likelihood some of those in the senior ranks.
