Liberal leader Steven Del Duca stands by candidate who made ‘hurtful’ remarks about the gay community

— two of them for controversial remarks about homosexuality., said Friday he was “disappointed and deeply embarrassed” to be reminded of the 2004 opinion piece he wrote in the University of Toronto’s student newspaper opposing a subsidy for a campus LGBTQ group.

“LGBTQ people, by contrast, are not a needy or victimized subset of society,” he wrote in the March 15, 2004 edition of“You’re here, you’re queer; we got used to it a long time ago. Go find your $25,000 elsewhere.” In his apology, Semple said he drew “offensive, short-sighted, and not at all comparable parallels to my own experience with bullying growing up. As a young and naïve student, I never intended to hurt people, but wrote provocatively, with flippant language.”

He's got no one left

Where are that guy’s teeth?

overthemoonmark 🤣🤥

But not too close in case they're mistaken for a gay couple.

Oh boy, that’s the Liberal candidate in my ridding.

Good grief I can't stand the libtards but cancel culture is killing society. Whatever happened to sticks and stones?

Is this the guy who was 13 when he made the comments. Are we really going back that far now on candidates? 13 year olds make terrible choices. I was a Leafs fan.

Woof

Not to connect to the growing weight of the vote of religious minorities largely hostile to LGBT issues.

It's a winnable riding, so that's all that matters to Del Duca.

Standing by his man because the riding is in play. Much easier to fire a young man in an un-winnable riding for a comment made when when he was 13. onpoli Hypocrisy

Profile: Steven Del Duca's visibility problem could be a curse and blessing for Ontario LiberalsDel Duca might benefit from this blank slate factor in a race against a vulnerable incumbent. Some of the things he is known for, politically, are for him best… The only problem with our platform is that to most it isn’t very visible. I hope this remedies that some he's certainly a lot less visible than a premiere who went into the election with a track record of intimidating and covering up so the public wouldn't know his mayor brother was a crackhead. Apparently it doesn't matter what your background is if you're conservative and rich. You don't need a pandemic to explain Del Duca's low name recognition. It's completely normal for a new leader of an opposition party. McGuinty and Hudak had low recognition going into their 1st elections, despite being leader of the opposition (Del Duca isn't even an MPP).
