ALBERT BRIDGE, N.S. — As a parent, Denika Fercho knows the fall/winter virus drill all too well — when a member of the family picks up a bug, it will run ...

The first virus of the cold and flu season came when one of her teenagers got a cold bug a day before school started this year.“The older kids stayed away from the younger kids. It was probably four weeks for us to get that first bug out of the house and four weeks ago another one comes in. It’s still in the house.”“ doesn’t mean you are sick a week, it means the house is sick for weeks,” Fercho said.

Paul Landry, regional executive director of education with Strait Regional Centre of Education:"Due to the fact we are in flu season, we know many of the absences are due to illness." CONTRIBUTEDIn response to an inquiry about fall attendance, the Strait Regional Centre for Education said the monthly average student absentee rate for Grades P-12 went from 9.6 per cent in September to 9.9 per cent in October and 14.7 per cent in November.

For the few weeks before school closed down for the Christmas holidays, absenteeism was increasing in most schools. He said the SRCE has been following Public Health guidance which includes encouraging these healthy habits: getting vaccinated, staying home if unwell, sanitizing hands and high-touch surfaces, and creating a supportive environment for those who decide to wear a mask. Schools continue to have hand sanitizer available and masks for those who choose to wear them. High-touch surfaces also continue to be cleaned regularly.
