Anyone who’s spent any time in a locker room understands they are not spaces hospitable to or accepting of difference.
In Major League Baseball, there’s a ritual they call kangaroo court. The clubhouse doors are closed, a judge is appointed and he punishes his colleagues for failure to follow the rules.. But that’s the difference between us and them. Most of them seem to like it that way. I was thinking that once the online congratulations from a tidal wave of strangers die down in a few days, Nassib has to go back into that locker room with a bunch of guys who may not be quite as supportive.It’s become a tired commonplace in entertainment and media to call things brave. You said something everyone you know agrees with? Brave. You wrote something mildly controversial for money? Brave. You tweeted? Brave.
There are his colleagues in the locker room. There are his opponents on the field. There are the good ol’ boys who control football. There are the fans sitting close enough to the field to be heard if they yell. If he’s as clued-in as he seems, Nassib must know it doesn’t get hard now. If he complains, they will call him a complainer. If he lashes out, they will call him a bad teammate. If he draws too much attention, they will call him a me-first guy.
thanks for this thoughtful article. To those dismissing Nassib's bravery and how historic his coming out is, you demonstrate an appaling lack of awareness to what LGBT people in sports orgs such as the NFL have to go through... even in 2021.
