A local caregiver says calls to be by his wife’s side during a recent outbreak in her unit at Sault Area Hospital were not heeded, leading to a fall and worsening conditions for the multiple transplant survivor.
“She is a double lung and liver transplant recipient and she needs constant care and personal care that I have been able to provide her for the past 12 years,” he added. Louis said he understands the need for outbreak procedures, but notes Sault Area Hospital’s own web site says there are exceptions that can be made for caregivers visiting COVID-positive or COVID-suspect patients in the situation of mobility and cognitive impairment, among others. He wonders why Nancy's need for constant care was not considered to be eligible for the exemption.
"Why 10 days for a lock down when the medical director of Canada says that after 24 hours with no symptoms you’re ready to go?" asked Loius. In a statement, Sault Area Hospital communications and public affairs officer Rose Calibani said due to patient confidentiality the hospital is not able to speak about specific patients.
