Single-use food and beverage containers accounted for much more litter found in Canada's natural spaces in 2020 than they did before the pandemic, according to a new report.

TORONTO -- Restaurants' inability to offer their usual dine-in service during much of 2020 may explain why an unusually high amount of food-related litter was found across the country, a new report says.

Last year, single-use food and beverage containers made up 26.6 per cent of waste collected through the program – nearly twice as high a percentage as in 2019, before the pandemic. That dubious honour goes to cigarette butts and other smoking-related paraphernalia, which comprised nearly 29 per cent of all items collected. There were more than 83,000 cigarette butts among the 42,000 kilograms of waste found and clean up last year.

I've said for years and years that littering fines should start at $2000 and go up from there. If you get caught throwing litter out of a vehicle then you should lose your licence and your car should be impounded. Might help deter it a bit more.

Most of it is usually steps away from a garbage can

🤬🤬

Let’s ban plastic bags!!

… they removed most trash bins because of you know, the lie about China-19 sticking to surfaces

Obviously, they took away the garbage bins at the Tim Hortons & McDonald drive thru!!! Nasty people decided to throw it out the window at the restaurant or on the hwy's especially 401..

People are complain about climate change, over use of plastic etc and yet think nothing about dropping their fast food garbage, cans, face masks and more. I just don’t get human beings anymore.

Less resto more bagged food outside on the go

I thinks that is because there was no monitored garbage cans anywhere!

I’m constantly picking up garbage in my nearby park it’s infuriating 😡Why are people so fricken stupid?!

Bring back the anti littering campaign of the 70's. Still cant get give a hoot don't pollute out of my head.

We gotta make a change It's time for us as a people to start makin' some changes Let's change the way we eat Let's change the way we live And let's change the way we treat each other You see, the old way wasn't working so it's on us to do What we gotta do, to survive -Tupac

We're so gross. Sad that we cant keep own garbage under control

People can be such pigs 🐷 🐽!

What are they doing checking my couch?

Sherpa guide uses savings to help colleagues during pandemicThe scenic Himalayan mountain trails that normally draw throngs of foreign trekkers to Nepal have been empty for more than a year, with most of the country's tourism industry still shut down by the pandemic. Everything I’ve read about Sherpa guides talks about how their job feeds and houses everyone in the family - often extended family. There must be real struggles here 😞

Families face off over COVID-19 vaccination status amid hopes of a more social summerTensions are rising between Canadians who got their COVID-19 shots and those who didn’t, when they try to navigate long-awaited get-togethers as pandemic reopenings roll out across the country You do what you have to do to keep your family safe. Canadians are not facing off with Trumpy Republicans unless their family is in the states. What a silly headline. And don't force people to hold your baby. I avoid visiting until a child is 2 years old as all I get is criticism for not knowing how to hold them properly.

Survey reveals one in five vaccine-hesitant Canadians would lie about jab to travelA new survey suggests about 20 per cent of vaccine-hesitant Canadians would lie about their COVID-19 vaccine history if injections were required for international or domestic travel. Even though fake vaccine passports will flourish, make EVERYONE provide proof of vaccination If majority of “sick” people lied about feeling ill to get groceries, why wouldn’t they lie about travel…lol That's precisely why a vaccine 'passport' is necessary.
