Stephanie Labbe, whose heroics in goal helped Canada win gold in soccer at the Tokyo Olympics, opened up about her struggles. She said 'high levels of anxiety and multiple panic attacks' impeded her training during the Games.

Stephanie Labbe, whose heroics in goal helped Canada win gold at the Tokyo Olympics, says she could not train for part of the Games because of "high levels of anxiety and multiple panic attacks."

But it came with a cost, as Labbe explains in an essay, released by FIFPRO, titled "Winning the Olympics isn't enough to cure mental health." Labbe, who recently moved to French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain, has previously detailed dark times in 2012 and after the 2016 Rio Olympics. Labbe says after the Rio bronze, she "couldn't wait to get home and share my achievement with as many people as I could."

Labbe notes while that the issue of mental health has been highlighted recently by gymnastics star Simone Biles and tennis ace Naomi Osaka, "the problem is that when a mental health challenge comes along it can be much harder to recognize and express."
