If it wasn't for his high-tops, Kevin Gausman says his ankle would be in pieces after being hit with a line drive on the weekend.

says his decision to wear high-top shoes may have saved his season after a comebacker hit him on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Gausman said his ankle"would probably be in pieces right now" if he had been wearing different shoes. Gausman was hit in the side of the foot by a 100 m.p.h line drive from Rays star Wander Franco on Saturday, knocking him out of the game in the top of the third inning. The Blue Jays diagnosed Gausman with a right-foot contusion and said X-rays came back negative.

It remains to be seen whether Gausman will be able to make his next start Thursday night in Seattle. On Monday, the veteran right-hander said he was still struggling to push off with his foot but added that he would have a better understanding of his condition after a bullpen session on Tuesday. Gausman said he would only pitch against the Mariners if he was confident doing so wouldn't make the injury worse, a message manager Charlie MontoyoGausman has been having an all-star calibre season so far, with a 2.86 ERA and 100 strikeouts in his first 16 starts.
