As natural disasters occur more frequently and severely, it is becoming riskier to live and work in Canada. That’s not an opinion—it’s simple math. Severe weather events in 2023 caused $3.1-billion in insured damage in communities across Canada, recording one of the highest annual totals in the previous four decades. But unlike in 2016, when a huge wildfire ravaged Fort McMurray, the losses weren’t attributed primarily to a single catastrophe.

As well, three in four Atlantic Canadians say flood preparedness should be a priority for government, while one in five of those polled fear they could lose their home in a flooding event. Current government disaster relief programs serve as a stopgap, but they are a last line of support for people who are uninsured or underinsured. They do not provide the same level of financial protection as insurance.
