Although Amy Coney Barrett replaces Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she is more aptly described as heir to conservative hero Antonin Scalia.

Like Scalia, for whom she once clerked, she is a committed Roman Catholic as well as a firm devotee of his favoured interpretation of the Constitution known as originalism. Those qualifications delight many on the right but dismay liberals and others who fear her votes could result in the chipping away of some laws, especially the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Her legal writings and speeches show a commitment to originalism, a concept that involves justices endeavouring to decipher original meanings of texts in assessing whether someone's rights have been violated. Many liberals say that approach is too rigid and doesn't allow the Constitution's consequences to adjust to vastly changing times.

"Once a precedent is deeply rooted," a 2017 article in the University of Pennsylvania Journal of constitutional Law, which Barrett co-wrote, said, "the Court is no longer required to deal with the question of the precedent's correctness." But it added: "None of this is to say that a Justice cannot attempt to overturn long-established precedent. While institutional features may hinder that effort, a Justice is free to try.

At Notre Dame, where Barrett began teaching at 30, she often invoked God in articles and speeches. In a 2006 address, she encouraged graduating law students to see their careers as a means to "building the kingdom of God." Barrett has twice joined dissenting opinions asking for abortion-related decisions to be thrown out and reheard by the full appeals court. Last year, after a three-judge panel blocked an Indiana law that would make it harder for a minor to have an abortion without her parents being notified, Barrett voted to have the case reheard by the full court.

I thought judges are supposed to be impartial and act in a reasonable manner Not to be biased or partisan IDK, maybe the law of the US won’t allow for non-biased un-partisan approach 🤷‍♀️

The left is in full meltdown. Can’t wait for the total psycho frenzy when he gets re-elected. Total mayhem. Must see TV of 2020.

That’s awesome news! Thank you.

Trump’s nominee to the USSC, is too junior a judge with insufficient judiciary experience, having only 3-years experience as a judge. Her stance on abortion & a follower of extreme right wing positions make her a bad choice to the USSC.

such a shame..

Democrat hate , insanity

Amazing

At least there is OVERSIGHT in the US system CTV, as you know the Senate confirms or rejects the nominee and in Canada the dictatorial Crime Minister just APPOINTS them...but you knew that...right

They haven't buried Ruth Bader Ginsburg yet, have some fucking respect 🤬

Great choice ACBForScotus

Another story written by AP “Staff”. Meaning not one journalist at AP would put their name on it. Perhaps these same “staff” can explain how CDN SC Justices are chosen?

She shouldn't have been. Merrick Garland.

But if she is a Scalia disciple and Scalia and RBG were BFF’s, how could she accept

Scalia was the best :)

Planned Parenthood will be having kittens.

Good pick. She will do a great job

Awesome! The country is going to hell with the radical left. I mean abortion for full term babies?! It is sinful!

Its a great day for unborn babies!

She is a right wing radical and a throwback to women's rights
