Air Canada says its grounded Boeing 737 Max aircraft are equipped with two optional safety features reportedly lacking in the crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia.

the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air jets involved in recent fatal crashes were not equipped with angle of attack indicators and disagree lights that are used by the aircraft's software system during flight to avert stalls.

According to the report, the safety features are not standard on the aircraft and are offered by Boeing as upgrades. Air Canada spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur says the airline purchased the features for its fleet of 24 Max 8 planes. The causes of the Ethiopian Airlines crash on March 10 and the Lion Air crash five months earlier, both on takeoff, are being investigated. Investigators are looking at whether a new software system added to avoid stalls may have been a contributing factor.

Air Canada has removed its grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 jets from service until at least July 1 in order to provide more certainty for passengers that wish to book flights in the coming months.

When it comes to aircraft there should be no extra charge for safety options. They should all come with all the safety options available.

Interesting to know if Air Canada ever had to use them.

Since when is safety an option?!?! WtF!!! It not cup holder FFS!!!! Boeing should be crucified for this!!!!

Safety 'options'....Boeing should be ashamed of themselves and charged with criminal negligence causing death. Bring on the class actions

When safety is an option, look for another supplier!!!

To be blunt these shouldn’t even be counted as safety OPTIONS.....pointing to the obvious results without them ...they should be as standard as seats and toilets..

Ffs. Boeing makes airlines purchase safety options not to nosedive into ground. Unreal the greed.

Not sure who to blame here, of course Boeing is at fault, but shouldn’t the Airline Company not accept the planes in the first place Shouldn’t there be someone checking the PO against what was received? Hmmmm 🤔

Selling safety...jeez.

So when is safety an “option”?

REALLY wow what kind of business is Boeing running ... Saftey options as upgrades ... One would think. They would be mandatory .. may God bless the people killed in both plane crashes ...

Pilot error.

I’m not really into the whole litigious thing, but I hope the affected families sue the shit out of Boeing.

These options were missing because Boeing wasn't upfront about how badly it was needed and because FFA who is in Boeing's pockets did not require these options being bought either.

Safety options cost extra?

Cancel any further plans to buy more planes from Boeing. A company that places profits over people so callously does not deserve any business from Air Canada.
