Zali Steggall is calling for Labor to nominate a female speaker in the lower house and for more prominence for the crossbench | LisaVisentin

Independent Warringah MP Zali Steggall has urged the Albanese government to nominate a woman for speaker in the House of Representatives to reflect the voice of female voters in the election and also called for changes to parliamentary processes to give more prominence to the new expanded crossbench.

Earlier on Monday, Steggall said she would consider the role if approached by the government, but threw her support behind third-term Centre Alliance-turned-independent member for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie. “Women want a seat at the table, and there is talk of Labor putting a lot more women on their front bench, which is good,” Steggall said. “But in circumstances where you have a prime minister and treasurer, who are male and you have a leader of the opposition who is male, I think a female speaker would be more than appropriate.

The speaker is responsible for the proper function and order of the chamber by ensuring MPs abide by the rules, called standing orders, and that correct parliamentary procedure is followed. They are expected to perform the role impartially. The role is elected by a vote of all MPs.Sharkie said it would be an “honour” to be offered the speakership, but emphasised she had not had any discussions with Labor about the role.

LisaVisentin No we may get another Bronwyn Bishop who was a witch by any standard.

LisaVisentin Got big shoes to fill. Won't be as go as Bronwyn Bishop.

LisaVisentin Okay Zali. We will get Bronwyn Bishop back into parliament & get her to be Speaker again

LisaVisentin As long as she’s not like Bronwyn Bishop, possibly the worst speaker ever.

LisaVisentin Zero gender diversity amongst the teals and here they are trying to install a Bronwyn Bishop type speaker. Let’s focus on competence.

LisaVisentin Why didn't she call for those things when the LNP were in Government?

LisaVisentin Is she putting up her hand then?

LisaVisentin Great work Zali! Sensible, intelligent discussion and problem solving vs shouty, entitled, bullies smirking away at each other. Parliament needs to represent the best of Australia and be an aspirational place to work. Bring it!

LisaVisentin Maybe zali should be you So you can become slightly relevant

LisaVisentin Love Z. But she needn’t say waste-of-time rubbish like this.

LisaVisentin Sorry cant today. Visiting old neighbour moved to Brisbane. Any other day.

LisaVisentin zalisteggall why don’t you put your hand up?

LisaVisentin I think Zali would be a great Speaker.

LisaVisentin She asked nothing from the LNP.

LisaVisentin The ALP should nomimate one of the Teal women!

LisaVisentin How is it not sexual discriminatiom when the primary consideration for a role is your sex.

LisaVisentin

LisaVisentin Ha

LisaVisentin Yeah, Bronwyn Bishop did a fantastic job!

LisaVisentin Wouldn't mind a report or two on... you know... The Government.

Independent Andrew Wilkie prepared to discuss Speaker role in new Labor governmentTasmanian MP says having an independent Speaker ‘would send a powerful and positive message’ after voters elected large crossbench That's not even a bad idea just from the pov that Wilkie hates both sides. Less likely now looks like 77 seat majority. But still would be good for politics - maybe not so for his electorate. He would be great.

Anthony Albanese’s choice of Speaker will be key to transforming our testosterone-fuelled parliament | Ellen FanningThere is speculation the prime minister might choose a truly independent umpire, with Andrew Wilkie’s name mentioned Dai Le is the only real independent woman in parliament. Would she even get consideration? I wondered about the Speaker position. There r many reasons why labor should consider a crossbench appointment. Having said that Wilkie will be gun shy on any agreement with labor after what Gillard did to him. I think 1 of his demands would have to be actioned timor. insiders Why do they use a elected representative? Why not train 6 or so public servants to be the speaker. I know I'll hear Westminster system, but this bit is broken.
