Jessica Irvine, a senior economics writer for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, has been writing about money for almost two decades. She kicked off 2021 with a new weekly newsletter, Money with Jess, which is all about new ways to save your hard-earned dollars.
In an exclusive Q&A for subscribers, get to know Jess and hear the lengths to which she’s gone to save money. She will also be online for an hour from midday Tuesday to chat to subscribers. Leave your questions in the comments section.I have an honours degree in Economics and joined thein 2005 to write the daily dollar column.
The first rule of journalism is to avoid use of the personal pronoun. I’ve never cared much for that rule! Eventually, all opinion columnists run out of things to say, so you start to draw from your personal life and those around you. For my weekly economics column, I still call around senior bureaucrats, bankers and economists as the source of my opinions. For my money columns, I am inspired by friends, colleagues and people on social media.
It’s about money! With me: Jess. It’s for anyone looking to save money, earn more money or invest the money that they already have more wisely. Which, I think, is most of us. I’m kicking off withon how to write your own household budget. It’s the first rule of personal finance: make a budget. But people get so bamboozled by it. So I’ve been making downloadable and printable worksheets to help people along the way.
What are your top tips for people to keep in mind when they’re trying to be smarter with their money?Keep it simple. Being good with money all comes down to one simple equation: “Spend less than you earn; invest the rest.” The key to implementing that equation in your life is to actually know where your money comes from and goes to. I urge people to track their money in whatever way suits them: by spreadsheet, app or just pen and paper, like me. Then, prune every expense you can. Shop around.
