‘You’re still a human being’: Brett Sutton on public criticism during COVID

Each week, Benjamin Law asks public figures to discuss the subjects we’re told to keep private by getting them to roll a die. The numbers they land on are the topics they’re given. This week, he talks to Brett Sutton. Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, 53, was one of the most familiar faces during the worst of the COVID pandemic in the state.

It certainly comes with the territory during a crisis. It shouldn’t be unexpected that the response – in really extraordinary circumstances – gets interrogated in fine detail, and that people have appropriately strong and passionate feelings about it. It takes some getting used to, but I came to navigate it better, day by day, week by week. There’s a spectrum of views. A whole bunch of them you need to listen to because they are genuine, reasonable perspectives. Even the stuff that’s really difficult to hear: you need to open yourself to it as well. I’ve had people say, “This is what I went through as a hospitality worker and I effing hate you!” That’s okay. They suffered through it and that’s a human perspective.
