The Victorian government has promised an extra 40,000 elective surgeries will be undertaken this year, but doctors doubt it is possible. Phil Muscat is among the thousands of people languishing on the waiting list.

Phil Muscat constantly feels like his hand has been slammed in a door.

with an extra 40,000 operations to be undertaken this year, building up to 240,000 every year from 2024. “My public elective surgery waiting list is catastrophic,” Cunningham said. “That’s a fair and realistic adjective to use for it.” Cunningham, who treats both public and private spinal surgery patients, said all major metropolitan hospitals in Melbourne were balancing soaring public surgical waitlists, alongside increasing numbers of trauma patients, who require urgent surgery.“I only get through one elective spinal surgery case a month at the moment and I’m putting two or three patients on the list every fortnight,” Cunningham said.

As part of the $1.5 billion plan, Victorian hospitals will be operating at night and on weekends to try to catch up. Frankston Private Hospital is set to be effectively taken over by the state government, and run as a public surgery centre, in the hope it will handle up to 9000 public patients a year, from this year. The Bellbird Private Hospital in Blackburn will also be transformed into a public surgery centre.

While government investments, including a new campus for the Royal Melbourne Hospital at the Arden precinct, will create space for 10,500 additional elective surgeries annually, he said, these projects were years off completion.

Talk is cheap .

Sometimes government promises and reality are mutually exclusive!

There is a huge gap between what Dan promises and reality!

Our healthcare system is so broken. Phase-out subsidising private care providers tens of billions every year and make them take more public patients in the interim. Taxpayers are already funding their greed.

As one of the 135,000 on the list I’d like to access vad

Usual lies and bullshit from the Victorian Government.

In the promise, I gather there is a plan to address it and what will your headline be if he manages to do this, will you show he got it right?

Just one of the many electoral promises that will not be delivered by amnesiac IBAC Andrews. Labor lies, long on promises short on delivery and the fools in Victoria vote these 🤡🤡🤡 back in. NotMyPremier

If the Private health insurance industry can only exist if it is propped up to the tune of 30% by the tax payer then it has failed. Clearly the money could be better spent going back into the public system.

It won’t happen but there will be more stenography rather than journalism & these ‘promises’ like everything else will be swept under the carpet rather than the journalists doing their job and holding the government to account.

How is ther a massive waiting list when labor has been in charge of the health system for most of the last 2 decades?
