'You can't just break': Teens tell how drought affects family life on the land | niltiac

For teenager Sarah Wood, the worst thing about the drought is the stress it causes for her family. "It's horrible to see Mum and Dad breaking because they're your rock," she says.

UNICEF Australia chief executive Tony Stuart says when people often talk about the drought in terms of the farm and the farmer and overlook a third element – the family. John Dean, the district clinical leader in Wagga Wagga for NSW Health's child and adolescent mental health programs in schools, says young people living with drought often struggle with their emotional wellbeing.

Mr Kleinschmidt remembers the moment his parents came into his bedroom one evening to tell him they were going to de-stock because they could no longer afford water and feed for the herd. His parents were unemployed until his father got a job labouring on a nearby farm – he then joined him, part-time after school. When that dairy farm also decided to destock, they had to look for work again.

"We have been feeding sheep since February this year and spending up to $25,000 for every six weeks - $35,000 now there are lambs on the ground," he says. "We have had every problem under the sun this year ... and have lost countless numbers of livestock."
