A private security company being paid by residents to patrol the streets of some of Brisbane's wealthiest suburbs says its presence in the area is helping people sleep at night.Residents in Brisbane's wealthy northern suburbs have paid private security to patrol their streets
24/7 Group managing director Randall Hughes said six guards were stationed in the suburbs over the weekend to "alleviate the fear that some people are living under at the moment". He said his staff, who were licensed, trained in first aid, and had passed police checks were primarily a deterrent to would-be criminals.
"On a public street they don't have any greater capacity than the general public to be able to start arresting anyone or detaining people, but they do have capacity to be able to step in if someone is going to cause danger," she said."They certainly can't tell the general public to move on, anyone is still allowed to be on a public street."
"These sorts of things used to be done through informal social control, the eyes on the street and the guardianship would be provided by home owners," she said.
The ruskies will be all the healthier for it
No. That's why we pay taxes, for the police to protect us. And they should be chastised when they refuse too
Yes
What about bringing back the police beat? Cops were supposed to walk the neighbourhood....
Why when my own shotgun can do the same job but better results
They carry a torch not a flashlight
ABC News 24 is free for axpayers but patients at Lifehouse must pay
Ahh yes, the wanten dystopia of anarchy and private enterprise. What could possibly go wrong?
Why? What could a private security guard, sleeping in his car do? Remember the wonderful private security guards in the quarantine hotels.
Yes, but only to chastise my neighbors for their bad haircuts and or clothes
Only if it was not a toothless tiger exercise.
No. They don't do anything and can't do anything. What do we want to become like the US with private 'gated communities'? No thanks
Absolutely. Some bad neighbours would be worth it.
I just knew this was the 4007 postcode
No. We don’t live in the USA where the rich essentially harass people they don’t want in their street with hired thugs. This is dumber than raiding your super to buy a house 🤦♂️
No
Why? Because our basic right to protect ourselves was stolen by the politicians who are protected by their armed guards paid by taxpayers money? Ridiculous.
Lol
That sounds like a remarkably ...privileged... thing to do.
Sadly it’s an alternative that I would seriously consider because there is no way any govt will fund real law & order presence in the ‘burbs or on the roads. 🥴🥴 They avoid it like the plague😬 Why🤔
If I lived in Bexley.
How much? Ill watch houses in rich areas for $100 an hour.
I’d be happy with a couple of speed cameras and a few more bendy traffic calming chicanes to divert traffic back onto the main road where they belong. The street is not a main street so the 50kmh applies but drivers passing through don’t care about speed limits.
Why? Don’t we pay taxes for the police?
Taxes pay for police. We are not living in Brazil.
We do, it's called the Police force
Absolutely not, one step to closed gated communities for those who have and those who have not.
I don’t have to. I live in a street with DanAndrews, every night without fail there is at least 20 police cars & multiple Vic Police all paid for by the Victorian taxpayers Safest street in Victoria
No, they will throw me down the stairs
definitely not
Yeah, it's called the police & neighbourhood watch. Private security is useless.
ABSOLUTELY, YES.
trickle down economics
How long before the cops stopped showing up if you screwed with the guard? I could park my wife Audi TTRS there and collect it at 3am in my usual garb. . Pill on boots cheap jeans and flanno. I probably can find a black beanie but I'd need to buy a hoodie.
yeah then I’d go burgle his house
Is it another value we should share with US, communities with private security guards...
At which point you need to re evaluate how we are going as a society. Dog eat dog competitive tropes? or a more equitable one where crime isn’t a “cost of doing business” in the winners and losers way we are headed…
No. We are NOT the USA.
How many layers of authority do citizens need before it becomes a place of oppression by eager men searching for authority to inflict upon others.
I’d do it for $35ph.. definitely.
No, and I would go out of my way to make their life a misery.
Welcome to Brazil 🥴

Man and woman pushed down stairs by security guards at Gold Coast pubA confronting incident of violence outside a Gold Coast pub, in which security guards pushed a man and woman down a flight of stairs, has been caught on camera. She did strike first but the guard should of just grabbed her wrist not push her and that other guard should be charged as that was over excessive. Any idiot knows not to argue or hassle bouncers Yeah, you can do that old mate.
