​ Australia faces a short​fall​ of more than 4000 secondary school teachers by 2025.

Ministers met in Canberra on Friday and committed to releasing a national action plan on teacher shortages by December. Australia faces a shortage of more than 4000 secondary school teachers by 2025. The school population is forecast to grow by more than 10 per cent by 2031, while enrolments in university teaching courses have already slumped, down 8% between 2017 and 2020.

Universities Australia proposed a degree apprenticeship system in which student teachers do more of their training in schools. Clare said it was important to get the model right.Programs including Teach for Australia and La Trobe University’s Nexus program already enable professionals to get a teaching qualification in less than two years while working in a school.

Haythorpe said that to retain teachers, it was important to give them proper pay and better conditions and not pit teachers against each other with performance-based bonuses.

adamlcarey Because piling more and more people into the front of STEM education has really been a great solution to perceived workforce shortages in that area.

adamlcarey There’s a heap grad teachers. Many just pull the pin with stress within the first 5 years because it’s too hard.
