A Sydney mayor has lashed the state government and police over the increasing privatisation of New Year’s Eve festivities on the foreshore | michaelkoziol

The mayor of North Sydney has strongly criticised the government’s move to ticketed New Year’s Eve events along the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker said the council was “put in a really difficult position” because the government and police insisted on strict security measures and ticketing at its prime harbourside viewing locations.“It’s a cost shift from the state government [and] it will constrain the sense of celebration by the harbour,” she said. North Sydney agreed to ticketed entry at major sites, but this time decided not to charge people to attend.

About 40,000 once attended Bradfield Park, underneath the Harbour Bridge, but that is now ticket-limited to 17,000. Blues Point used to attract as many as 15,000; this year, it is capped at 7400. All three of North Sydney’s ticketed sites sold out in days but, as they are free, there is no guarantee those people will show up.North Sydney mayor Zoe Baker on ticketed events on New Year’s Eve

Crowds used to pile into Mrs Macquarie’s Chair to be among the first in the world to usher in the new year. The 22,000-capacity Dawes Point Park, underneath the Harbour Bridge, is free and unticketed – it opens at 1pm on the day, although alcohol is banned. All Inner West Council viewing areas on the Balmain peninsula are free and unreserved, with the same prohibition on booze.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore has recently embraced free ticketing for some City of Sydney-managed viewing sites, but is a long-standing critic of charging people to access the foreshore. Baker said North Sydney Council was unhappy and next year she would lobby for more open and inclusive arrangements. “We think it’s the worst of both worlds in that it restricts the number of people while pushing the costs on to the council without us having any autonomy,” she said.

Scott Morrison thanks colleagues on eve of censure over secret ministries scandalAs parliament readies to consider a censure motion against the former prime minister over his secret ministries, the opposition formally decides against rebuking Scott Morrison — though one MP looks likely to cross the floor. 'I would like to thank the former health; finance; industry, science and resources; treasury; and home affairs ministers for their amazing support' A number of his colleagues remain angry at him, won't do anything about it, but angry at him. Sounds on par for the LNP, lots of talk, no action. This is why our current political systems are not fit for purpose. Nor many of our politicians. To have corruption, dodgy deals, omnipotent politicians etc and still no consequences is beyond appalling. It’s a protection racket in the house. Disgraceful.

Meet Eve, the robot fruit picker who is here to 'fix a big problem'Fast-tracked by the federal government during the human farm worker shortage, Eve the fruit-picking robot prototype is expected to be ready for harvest next year. have these farmers tried paying workers enough money to be able to live on? although i suppose the robot isn't going to be creeped out by unwelcome sexual advances from the farmer like any female cropworkers are warned about Is it vaccinated? No jab, no job. No surprise I worked across 4 farms for 18 months, great job & good money the accommodation was reasonable but very cheap I rented a unit in the area though. They struggled to get Aussies to work I was one of the few the rest were migrant workers & backpackers, go figure. 🤔
