Graham Arnold’s side have a one-in-three chance of travelling to Pyongyang when the next stage of their path to the Americas in 2026 is revealed from 5pm Thursday.

This is how the draw will work. There are 18 teams from across the AFC who have been divided into six pots of three teams each, based on their FIFA rankings. Three groups of six teams will be drawn from these pots, with one team from each pot, starting from the bottom. The Socceroos are in pot two, along with Qatar and Iraq - which means Australia cannot face either of those two nations in the third round of qualifying.

Still with me?The top two teams from each of the three groups will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The third and fourth-placed teams will proceed to the fourth round, where two more teams can clinch their spot at the World Cup - and then there’s a fifth round, where another team will proceed to the intercontinental play-off. But we can worry about that down the road.
