Courtnee Vine sat out the Olympic qualifiers against Uzbekistan due to undisclosed personal reasons - but now she’s back, and ready to remind Tony Gustavsson what she can do.

Vine ruled herself out of Australia’s two-legged Paris 2024 qualifier against Uzbekistan due to undisclosed personal reasons, and in her absence, Gustavsson discovered some new attacking optionsbefore the Paris Olympics begin on July 26. The other two, friendlies against China in Adelaide and Sydney, have already sold out.

Sitting out may have put Vine’s position in the Australian pecking order at risk, but in an interview with Sydney FC’s website, she said the break had done her a world of good. The 25-year-old has been in terrific form in the A-League with six goals and three assists in her last five games. “I’m just still hoping to be part of that Olympic squad. I’m feeling really grateful that Tony’s called me back in for this one, and I’m feeling in a much better position than I have been. I’m really looking forward to that.”against France last year, which the Queensland government this week confirmed would be immortalised by a six-metre-wide bronze statue outside of Suncorp Stadium.

The Matildas will learn on Thursday which teams are in their group for the Olympics, but the draw is so stacked - World Cup winners Spain, France, Canada, Germany and the United States have all qualified - that even the most charitable outcome will look daunting.
