Women and children leaving a violent relationship will from Tuesday have access to a one-off payment of up to $5,000 under a new trial scheme.

One in six women and one in ten men also experience abuse before the age of 15.

Minister for Women’s Safety Anne Ruston said the payments will help address the financial barriers that may stop women leaving violent relationships. UnitingCare Australia national director Claerwen Little said the payment will help women to access some of the essentials needed to create a safe home for themselves and their children.

This is AMAZING! I secretly squirrelled money away when I prepped to leave, but we were lucky to make it out in one piece. My concern is that women leaving a non-violent relationship might exploit it. There’s nothing like false claims to destroy a positive step like this.

Its about time

The perpetrators' accounts should be garnished and the victim to have full access

SBS If man is jailed then ok but if allowed to get back out of jail or not be thrown in jail its not enough to make a move to escape from such rubbish.

SBS What about when the man is the victim? One in for intimate relationship deaths is male. Yes it surprised me too but go to ABS statistics and you’ll get the story in detail. Not all wives are wonderful and Snow White; not all men are evil and predators.

Good stuff, but wait ✋.... what will be penalties for false domestic violence claims & false police reports?

Will the families of men killed or injured at work be able to claim a benefit?

About bloody time

That's a bit excessive and politically correct pork-barrelling and irresponsible splashing of cash.

About bloody time

BrkntoBrilliant

geoffrey_payne Sounds great in theory, but with only $1500 available in cash, the rest has to go through government protocols to access. Meaning 1) extreme pain and difficulty, 2) potential for a landlord etc to have more insight into circumstances than they ever should have.

No women ever lied about her husbands, her circumstances, right?

Better than the Liberal party's idea of forcing victims to take money out of their super

Awaiting the NotAllMen whataboutmen crowd

ICAC: Premier-slaying 'star chamber' or anti-corruption hero?As former premier Gladys Berejiklian prepares to face NSW's corruption watchdog, questions have been raised over whether ICAC is a premier-slaying “star chamber” or anti-corruption hero. ffs. The Liberal party created NSW ICAC. It has several levels of oversight including a multi party parliamentary committee that is required to report on its operation annually. Any suggestion that NSW (especially NSW) needs a weaker watchdog is laughable. US offers payments, relocation to families of Afghans killed in botched drone attackThe Pentagon offers unspecified condolence payments to the family of 10 civilians killed in a botched US drone attack in Afghanistan during the final days before coalition troops withdrew from the country. Blood Money PerpetualWar Capitalism Civilisation ExtinctionRebellion The US assassinates people it identifies as its enemies. It identified many enemies and paid handsome rewards to their accusers. It seems a lot of these enemies were innocent. No charges, no trial. Just detention, torture, murder. How is this different? At least the US recognise their mistake. In the end it was a wrong decision resulted from a frenzied retaliation to the airport bombing..with a bad outcome. Sucks. Will the families take the offer?
