WATCH: A US dessert giant is working with police to track down a young woman who tampered with one of its products in a supermarket before placing it back on the shelf. 9News

Footage posted to social media shows the unidentified woman removing the lid to a tub of Blue Bell ice cream, licking the contents, before returning it back to the freezer.

A version of the video, which was posted to Twitter, has been viewed more than 10 million times. The video does not disclose details of the supermarket.“We take this issue very seriously and are currently working with law enforcement, retail partners and social media platforms. This type of incident will not be tolerated,” the company said in a statement.

“Food safety is a top priority, and we work hard to provide a safe product and maintain the highest level of confidence from our consumers.” The statement said during production, the desserts are flipped upside down and sent to a hardening room where the ice cream freezes to the lid creating a natural seal.

“The lids are frozen tightly to the carton. Any attempt at opening the product should be noticeable,” the company said.
