Neethu Thomas nearly died during childbirth in Perth , resulting in the removal of her uterus and leaving her with life-altering injuries.WA's health minister is being asked to intervene to address some of the key questions still remaining.Six days after giving birth in Perth 's King Edward Memorial Hospital, first time mother Neethu Thomas woke from a coma.
Ms Thomas was in a coma for six days and spent three weeks in hospital after suffering a massive haemorrhage following her baby's birth."I was not with her for this long period," Ms Thomas said.Now more than six months on, serious questions are being levelled at the top brass of WA's health system about Ms Thomas's care.
The Maternity Consumers Network , who assisted Ms Thomas during the hospital's internal investigation, say hospital policies suggest in this scenario the woman be admitted and continue to be observed.But around 11am, one and a half hours after being admitted, Ms Thomas was given a drug called oxytocin designed to bring on the birth.
A spokeswoman for the North Metropolitan Health Service — which oversees the hospital — rejected this suggestion, saying staffing levels were "appropriate" the day Ms Thomas was admitted.Ms Thomas received oxytocin over almost eight hours at amounts the hospital's investigation found were "at times not clinically indicated".The investigation also said a caesarean section was discussed with her and her husband.
Ms Bhat said the medical notes, written by medical staff either during or shortly after the procedures, indicate the haemorrhage happened after the placenta was removed.Australia is one of the safest places to give birth but our health system sometimes fails women and their families.The panel concluded in that context, the haemorrhage was caused by something called "uterine atony", the failure of the uterus to contract and stop the bleeding after childbirth.
Mr George felt abandoned by King Edward Memorial Hospital when they asked him to take his baby home while his wife remained critical, and he had to "beg" them to keep her for a few more days in the neonatal care unit.The panel found aspects of care centred on the decision to induce Ms Thomas "could be improved, but did not contribute to the clinical event".
