The veteran soap star has been ideally cast in Samuel Beckett’s absurd classic, Happy Days. 'Belinda Giblin is the best of the six Winnies I’ve seen in this two-handed play about marriage, hopelessness, stoicism and outlandish optimism,' writes ...

One perfect moment. Perhaps that’s as much as we can ever expect, but it’s enough. It comes when Winnie speaks of a time when she was not buried up to her waist: “when I had… the use of my legs”. Suddenly, her smile and her despair fight for the same real estate on her face, and Belinda Giblin is the best of the six Winnies I’ve seen in this two-handed play about marriage, hopelessness, stoicism and outlandish optimsim.Credit:Giblin is pretty good for the rest of the 72 minutes, too.

Giblin is ideally cast. Her saucer-sized eyes convey wonder and desolation in equal measure, and her smile is dazzlingly effervescent. This helps keep us on side, because, as her hopeless husband Willie knows, Winnie can be a frustration. Her trashcan memory means she mangles every quote for which she reaches by Shakespeare, Milton, Gray, Yeats and the rest, and she flits between subjects to dizzying effect.

Beckett imagined that the worst thing that could happen to a human would be to be forcibly awakened whenever one was dropping off to sleep: the Act Two scenario when Winnie is buried up to neck.Among other impacts, director Craig Baldwin’s cracking pace makes us arrive there sooner, and despite Act One’s humour and despair, it almost functions as a prelude to the shorter Act Two.

Boyd Cordner statementAustralian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) Chairman Peter V’landys AM has paid tribute to Kangaroos captain Boyd Cordner who announced his retirement today. Aren’t they embarrassed when they promote Kangaroos captain as a respectable position in the sport when they have destroyed the Kangaroos brand and done everything to prevent Australia playing internationals in recent years? You can’t have it both ways.

Vaccine rollout stumbles lead to slight drop in support for CoalitionThere is a softening in support for Mr Morrison but it did not translate into a boost for Labor leader Anthony Albanese. CroweDM The Margin of Error = 2.5%. You can calculate this yourself. N=1600. The 95% MoE=1/sqrt(N)=1/sqrt(1600)=1/40=0.025 = 2.5%. This is an approximation but quite close to the true calculated value. CroweDM Stumbles? More like catastrophic failures. When a govt. is consistently incompetent and reportage like this gives them a nudge rather than a wallop, this is why the drop in support is slight. The country’s future is at stake and you are complicit in this ongoing mediocrity. CroweDM Well done Sydney Motning herald on your early campaigning for Albo. He needs you on his side to win 👍🏻
